How MTG-OS tracks life for your Commander pod

MTG-OS is a life counter / life tracker for Magic: The Gathering. Commander, Brawl, Duel Commander, whatever the format ends up being at 11 PM on a Wednesday. Supports two to four players, and is designed to be part of the fun of Magic nights with friends.

Tap a player card to change their life total.

Swipe up or down on the commander shield button to raise or lower commander tax.

Touch the commander shield button for an immediate view of commander damage.

Toggle infect on and the card splits into ten vertical bars. Swipe right to fill them in, swipe left to take them back. When the card goes fully green, that player is out.

Most of these are decisions you'd never notice working. That's the point.

Built for Magic: The Gathering Commander, EDH, and Brawl

Each player gets a card themed to their guild (two-color pairs, the monos). Commander damage tracks per opponent. Partner commanders get separate trackers. Commander tax lives in the shield. Infect lives behind a toggle on the card.

There's no account, no setup, no asking which format you're playing. The app doesn't need to know.

Track commander damage, poison counters, and when a player dies

The phone is the second-biggest threat to a Commander game. The first is durdling. We can't help with the durdling.

When a player hits zero, a pulsating skull appears on their card. Tapping it opens a soundboard. The sounds are not labeled. We will not be describing them in marketing copy. The point is to annoy your friends, and the discovery is part of the bit.

The dead player's card does one thing now: that. They can't poke at the other counters, can't accidentally tap anyone else's life total. They have one job: heckle. And the app respects that.

It also keeps them at the table for another ten or fifteen minutes instead of domscrooling until the game ends.

A note on the official MTG companion app

It exists. It tracks life. It's also primarily an Arena and tournament tool, asks for a Wizards Account, and surfaces a promo for whichever set just dropped every time you open it. If that works for your group, it works.

MTG-OS opens to a starting-life screen. That's the whole pitch on that front.

FAQ

Q: Is it really free?

A: Yes. Banner ad on non-gameplay screens. No subscription, no premium tier, no unlock-your-counters-for-$3.99.

Q: Does it work for 1v1 Commander?

A: Two players, life set to 40 (or whatever the house rule is), start.

Q: Commander damage?

A: Separate commander damage trackers per opponent.

Q: How is this different from a spindown die?

A: A spindown goes to 20 and gets bumped under the table. MTG-OS counts past 20, remembers commander damage, tracks infect, has a soundboard for the deceased, and stays where you put it.

Q: Will you add a deck-builder, scanner, or commander bracket tool?

A: No. There are good apps for those. MTG-OS is doing something else.

Q: What is it doing, then?

A: You'll find out. This is the first version.
